What is Spravato?

Spravato is the brand name for esketamine nasal spray. It is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression in adults. A prescriber determines whether it may be appropriate based on your diagnosis, treatment history, health conditions, and current medications.

What to expect

  1. A psychiatric provider reviews your symptoms, treatment history, medical history, and medications.
  2. If treatment is appropriate and available, your provider explains the plan, potential benefits, and risks.
  3. You self-administer the nasal spray at the certified healthcare setting under direct supervision.
  4. You remain at the setting for monitoring for at least two hours after each treatment session.

Safety and transportation

Spravato can cause sedation, dissociation, dizziness, nausea, and increased blood pressure. The treatment setting monitors for side effects, including breathing problems. Your provider will review your individual risks and answer questions before treatment.

You must arrange a ride home after each session. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do other activities requiring full alertness until the next day after a restful night of sleep.
